SustainNK

North Kesteven District Council, alongside the Local Strategic Partnership, have launched a landmark campaign aimed at combating the growing threat of climate change. SustainNK is a commitment to changing the way we live in order to function as a District within the limits of our natural resources. SustainNK will document our journey, answer questions, provide information and make it easier for everyone who lives, works or visits North Kesteven to understand how we can all contribute to a sustainable future.

Lincolnshire Biodiversity Partnership

The Lincolnshire Biodiversity Partnership (LBP) brings together local authorities, statutory agencies, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations with a responsibility for and interest in biodiversity in the historic county of Lincolnshire (modern Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire).

It coordinates action, information and protection and provides services for partner organisations. LBP is independent of any of its constituent organisations.

The LBP has developed from the Lincolnshire Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Partnership, established in 1998. Partners worked together to achieve targets set out in the first Lincolnshire BAP, published in 2000, reviewed progress after five years and in 2006 published Lincolnshire Biodiversity Action Plan: Action for Wildlife in Lincolnshire 2nd Edition.

Sound, up-to-date information on biodiversity is essential to enable local authorities, public and private organisations and individuals to make well-informed decisions. Development of a Lincolnshire Environmental Records Centre (LERC) began in 2004 and the centre became fully operational in 2006. LERC now provides a biodiversity information service under the LBP.

Along with biological Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Local Wildlife Sites (LWSs) are the most important places for wildlife in the county. They have substantive nature conservation value, and make a significant contribution to the maintenance of biodiversity. They may also have an important role in contributing to public enjoyment and understanding of nature. With the publication of Local Wildlife Sites, Guidelines for their Identification and Selection in the Historic County of Lincolnshire, in 2006, management of the LWS system became a responsibility of the Partnership.

Lincolnshire County Council - Historic Environment Team

The Historic Environment Team is a record of all known archaeological and historical sites in Lincolnshire from the Stone Age (500,000 years ago) to the 20th century. The record includes archaeological sites, historic buildings, battlefields, parks and gardens, listed buildings, scheduled monuments and archaeological activities such as excavations and findspots.

Over 40,000 historic environment records are held on a computerised database which is linked to a mapping system. The database acts as an index to the records allowing the Historic Environment Team at Lincolnshire County Council to undertake searches of the records for the public, archaeologists, local authority planners and developers.

The Historic Environment Team will be bringing the Historic Environment Record database to Rauceby during the Nature on Your Doorstep event. This will offer visitors the opportunity to search the database for information on the archaeology and history of Rauceby, their street or other areas of the county.

The Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme will also be on hand to talk to members of the public and identify any archaeological finds that they may have picked up whilst out walking.

"The 11th Hour" (The Film)

The 11th Hour

Leonardo DiCaprio's “The 11th Hour” is a feature length documentary concerning the environmental crises caused by human actions and their impact on the planet. "The 11th Hour" documents the cumulative impact of these actions upon the planet's life systems and calls for restorative action through a reshaping of human activity. With the help of over fifty of the world's most prominent thinkers and activists, including reformer Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, “The 11thHour" documents the grave problems facing the planet's life systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans' habitats are all addressed, and their causes rooted in human activity. The combination of these crises call into question the very future not of the planet, but of humanity.

However, the most powerful element of “The 11th Hour” is not a portrait of a planet in crisis, but the offering of hope and solutions. Scientists and environmental advocates such as David Orr and Gloria Flora (note: these names can be interchanged for any of the experts) paint a portrait for a radically new and exciting future in which humanity seeks not to dominate the earth's life systems, but to mimic them and coexist. “The 11th Hour" calls for a future now within our grasp that is both sustainable and healthier.

An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth

Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced.

If that sounds like a recipe for serious gloom and doom think again. From director Davis Guggenheim comes the Sundance Film Festival hit, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, which offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it. That man is former Vice President Al Gore, who, in the wake of defeat in the 2000 election, re-set the course of his life to focus on a last-ditch, all-out effort to help save the planet from irrevocable change. In this eye-opening and poignant portrait of Gore and his "traveling global warming show," Gore also proves himself to be one of the most misunderstood characters in modern American public life. Here he is seen as never before in the media - funny, engaging, open and downright on fire about getting the surprisingly stirring truth about what he calls our "planetary emergency" out to ordinary citizens before it's too late.

With 2005, the worst storm season ever experienced in America just behind us, it seems we may be reaching a tipping point - and Gore pulls no punches in explaining the dire situation. Interspersed with the bracing facts and future predictions is the story of Gore's personal journey: from an idealistic college student who first saw a massive environmental crisis looming; to a young Senator facing a harrowing family tragedy that altered his perspective, to the man who almost became President but instead returned to the most important cause of his life - convinced that there is still time to make a difference.

With wit, smarts and hope, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH ultimately brings home Gore's persuasive argument that we can no longer afford to view global warming as a political issue - rather, it is the biggest moral challenges facing our global civilization.

Paramount Classics and Participant Productions present a film directed by Davis Guggenheim, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. Featuring Al Gore, the film is produced by Laurie David, Lawrence Bender and Scott Z. Burns. Jeff Skoll and Davis Guggenheim are the executive producers and the co-producer is Leslie Chilcott.

Amber Links

Climate change is the most serious threat humankind has faced. Life as we know it is likely to change beyond recognition - unless we take action. We need a massive and rapid global response to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and slow the rise in global temperature

Amber Links is an independent site, providing links to useful websites to encourage more effective personal responses to climate change. It encourages action, sustainable lifestyles, informed choices and the sharing of useful information.

NOrMAL Appeal

New Orleans Musicians Aid Lincolnshire

NOrMAL: 'New Orleans Musicians Aid Lincolnshire', is the brainchild of John Coops of Vortex Brothers and Jonathan Hoare of Rauceby Hall Events. Both based in South Rauceby, Lincolnshire, they felt the compulsion to do something proactive for the betterment of musicians in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, the region so cruelly ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. No one would disagree that New Orleans' heritage is built on the backs of those fine musicians who sprang from the region. New Orleans is culturally empty without its music.
